We care for Mother Nature as it is from Mother
Nature that we obtain our most important raw
material. We are aware of the value of our resource
and also care about other species being negatively
affected by tuna catches in some parts of the
world. For this reason, we have made the decision
that our tuna will only come from safe sources.
We only buy fish from responsible boats that
follow the appropriate dolphin safe measures
and can guarantee through third party observers
that the tuna fishing has not harmed any other
species.
Our task is to be part
of the companies that understand the relevance
of this issue, being approved members of both
the Earth Island Institute and the Inter-American
Association of Tropical Tuna, commissions that
watch over the sustainable exploitation of the
resource. We can
proudly say that we have been a dolphin safe
company for many years and that our strategy
is to continue supporting such programs in order
to protect marine resources.
Water treatment
plant
In search of a rational use of all our resources,
as well as the recycling of paper, cardboard,
plastic and other residuals of the production
process, we have set programs and objectives
to avoid environmental contamination.
Our
productive process is a clean procedure because
we use 100% of the whole fish as whatever is
not destined to the cans is employed in the
making of other sub-products such as fish meal,
fish oil, and tuna fins.
Our water treatment plant
is a state of the art residual deposit with
an investment of over 2 million dollars guaranteeing
drinkable out coming water.
Tuna Benefits
An excellent source of high quality protein,
tuna is rich in a variety of important nutrients
including minerals such as selenium, magnesium,
and potassium; the B vitamins niacin, B1 and
B6; and perhaps most important, the beneficial
omega-3 essential fatty acids. These essential
fatty acids are vital for human health but cannot
be produced by the human body; they must therefore
be obtained from foods. Cold-water fish like
tuna is a rich source of the omega-3 essential
fats, a form of necessary fatty acids in which
the standard American diet is sorely deficient.
Cardiovascular Health
Omega-3 fatty acids provide a broad array of
cardiovascular benefits. Omega-3s benefit the
cardiovascular system by helping to prevent
erratic heart rhythms, making blood less likely
to clot inside arteries (which is the ultimate
cause of most heart attacks), and improving
the ratio of good (HDL) cholesterol to potentially
harmful (LDL) cholesterol. And, as mentioned
above, omega-3s reduce inflammation, which is
a key component in the processes that turn cholesterol
into artery-clogging plaques.
Social Responsibility
Supporting the community is part of Tonnino’s
mission, which leads the Company to contribute
and promote the social development of the underprivileged
area where the facility is located. The accomplishment
of three different vital social projects in
the last five years demonstrates that Tonnino
takes social responsibility very seriously.
As part of our donation program, Tonnino adopted Puntarenas’
main hospital "Monseñor Sanabria" to provide equipment
to the neonatal facility. New technology equipment
ranging from monitors to a fully-equipped ambulance
was bought in coordination with the authorities of the
Hospital. This equipment has helped save many
babies’ lives as well as detected possible deceases
in time which can then be treated properly. Confident
that the neonatal unit was completed, the company shifted
to support underprivileged schools around our Facility.
Most of the students which attend these institutions
are the daughters and sons of our workers. This
social project consists of providing needy schools with
computers, school furniture, books and supplies as well
as improving the schools’ facilities by scraping, painting,
fixing and constructing; work which was carried out
by our own workers in an after-work schedule.
One of the main accomplishments of Tonnino’s social
responsibility programs is this support received by
all its personnel with the voluntary service campaigns.
Enriching is the spirit of solidarity demonstrated by
our employees while at the same time these programs
have provided the formation of values and social consciousness
among them.
Product Donation
Tonnino has in place a comprehensive program designed
to provide free canned tuna products to schools, orphanages
and homes for the elderly.
This program provides monthly product donations
amounting to over 60,000 cans of tuna per year to 23
centers throughout Costa Rica.
In addition, the company provides special product
donations during crises such as the effects of hurricanes
Mitch in 2003 and Stan in 2005.
Per year the company spends nearly $50.000 (fifty thousand
dollars) in product donation, distributed throughout
23 education centers around the province of Puntarenas.
Health Benefits
Tonnino offers free medical services to all our
employees at our production facility. The objective
is to provide prompt and efficient medical services
at no cost. The personnel can use these services
to prevent illnesses and also directly share their
health concerns with the doctor and nurses on board.
Educational health campaigns are developed
in order to provide information about how to take
the precautions to prevent diseases both at work
and at home.
Other services provided are vaccine campaigns,
optometry services, and dental work.
Security
at work
During the last five years, Tonnino has taken the
challenge to become a leading company in
Costa Rica in the
area of security at work. Thanks to a series of
actions and programs, hygienic measures implemented
in our modern production plant and a firm support
of the Management Team, we have a security at work
program which guarantees our employees’ safety when
carrying out their labor activities. Our index of
labor incidents has dropped dramatically since the
program started. Through awareness programs our
employees have learned to be aware of dangerous
situations which can be harmful and unsafe and they
can then transfer this knowledge to their families
and friends.
Tonnino provides the appropriate security
equipment for every specific job, ranging from protective
eyeglasses to metal gloves and caps.
Prevention is a key element to prevent accidents
and Tonnino understands its implications.

Silver Finalist in the category
of Outstanding Meat, Pate or

Mercury Facts
Tonnino
gourmet tuna does not only tempt your taste
but also takes good care of your health.
Such
statement is being confirmed by the fact
that Tonnino tuna fillets are manufactured
of small, juvenile Yellowfin tuna, which
are low in mercury.
It has
been proven that Yellowfin, or light tuna,
have mercury levels that are three times
lower than canned Albacore tuna (also called
white tuna), according to a Department of
Health study . (http://www.doh.wa.gov/Publicat/2004_news/04-012.htm).
It is
also known, that fish absorb methyl mercury
from water, as it passes over their gills
and as they feed on aquatic organisms. Larger
predator fish are exposed to higher levels
of methyl mercury from their prey. Therefore,
when using light tuna and juvenile tuna,
the risk of contamination with mercury is
reduced considerably.
