PAW NATURAW: Founders' Inspiration
Teva’s Health Dilemmas: The inspiration for Paw Naturaw arose with the troubled health of Teva, the Brill family’s cocker spaniel. As a puppy and into adulthood one serious problem seemed to replace another. Puzzling rashes and infections set the stage for blood diseases and hypothyroidism. Within Teva’s first six years of life she developed a file at the veterinary clinic as thick as a textbook.
Research & Discovery: Frustrated and deeply concerned the Brill family sought testing and consultation at the University of Wisconsin, the University of Illinois, and clinic after clinic, but to little or no avail; drugs continuously failed to provide a long term turnaround. In 2001, with the methods of modern medicine seemingly exhausted and with a still miserable companion animal, the Brills turned to holistic studies with love and hope. David Brill, father of the family and President of Paw Naturaw, uncovered literature concerning raw diets. Intrigued by the common sensibility of biologically appropriate feeding, the family decided to further investigate raw diets and canine nutrition. After consulting with Teva’s open-minded-but-admittedly- uninformed-about-raw-feeding veterinarian, the Brills decided unanimously to eliminate the unknown in Teva’s diet and switched her from her premium kibble to a wholesome raw diet.
Compelling Results: One day after the transition to a comprehensively researched, homemade, organic, raw diet, Teva displayed a dramatic improvement; she no longer vomited her daily yellow mucus. This deeply encouraged the Brills to continue with the organic raw diet. Over the next few months several changes became increasingly visible and presented incontrovertible proof of the benefits to feeding an organic raw diet. Small biodegradable stools replaced the large chalky stools in the yard. The smell of her breath morphed from intolerable to bearable to virtually unnoticeable. Additionally, rather than dragging Teva down the street on walks, she became excited about exercise and took to the lead. Inside the house, her youthful spunk and playfulness resurfaced, and toys were strategically strewn about the house. Her innate hunter senses and guardian responsibilities changed from slothfully indifferent to toned and alert. Her eyes cleared up and brightened. Gunk in her ears and infections that followed simply disappeared. Her unique surfer-blond coat showed a shininess and softness never seen on her before. Her body literally came back to life.
Empirical Success Inspires a New Entrepreneurial Spirit: After twenty-nine years as entrepreneurs in the human food industry, David and Jill Brill decided to shift gears and surmount a new challenge. Teva’s success with an organic raw diet and lifelong experience with companion dogs and the food industry inspired imaginative entrepreneurial possibilities. The Brill’s recruited their son, Jeffrey, to assist with research and development. Since 2003, the Brills have researched nutrition, canine physiology, and raw diets, collaborated with canine nutrition experts to assist with the diet formulations, experimented with and tested different diets, planned, and developed Paw Naturaw, a distinct values-led enterprise focused instinctually on balancing the needs of people, pets, planet, and profit.
